장기별 요오드 분포 및 하루 소비량


신체의 거의 모든 장기는 요오드를 필요로 합니다. 그 중에서 가장 많이 필요로 하는 곳이 갑상선으로 하루 약 6mg의 요오드를 소비합니다.(1)

 

갑상선과 마찬가지로 다른 많은 조직들도 요오드를 축적하는 능력을 갖고 있으며, 병리학적 상태(pathological conditions)에 따라 이 능력은 유지되거나 손실될 수 있습니다.(2)

 

갑상선과 요오드를 사용하는 갑상선 외 장기들은 NIS(sodium iodine symporter)라는 수송단백질을 이용하여 요오드를 흡수합니다. 여러 연구에 따르면 요오드 흡수를 위한 수송체 NIS는 갑상선, 침샘, 귀밑샘(parotid gland), 턱밑샘(submandibular gland), 골수, 뇌하수체, 췌장, 고환, 젖샘, 위점막, 전립선, 피부, 난소, 부신, 심장, 흉선, ,(3) 방광, 신장, 자궁내막(4) 유방, 결장(5), 눈물샘(6) 등 에서 발견됩니다. 뇌에서 요오드는 파킨슨병과 연관되어 있는 뇌의 부분인 흑질(substantia nigra)에 존재합니다.(7)

 

연구진들은 하루 약 8mg의 요오드가 요오드 외 조직에서 흡수된다고 추산하였습니다 (갑상선은 6mg을 흡수).(8,9) 유방은 갑상선 외 조직 중 가장 많은 양의 요오드를 흡수합니다. 50kg 여성의 경우 유방에서는 하루 약 5mg의 요오드를 필요로 하는 것으로 추산됩니다.(10,11,12) (그 외 장기에서 3mg 정도를 흡수합니다.)

 

각 조직은 다른 형태의 요오드를 저장합니다. 유방과 전립선은 요오드(iodine)를 저장하지만, 갑상선과 피부는 주로 요오드화물(iodide)의 형태로 저장합니다. 신장, 지라, , 혈액, 침샘, 장과 같은 다른 조직들은 두 형태 모두 저장할 수 있습니다.(1) (따라서 전신을 고려한다면 요오드화물과 요오드가 모두 들어있는 요오드 보충제를 섭취하는 것이 중요합니다.)

 

인체는 약 1,500 mg의 요오드를 저장할 수 있습니다.

부검결과를 통해 알아낸 체내 장기별 요오드 분포는 다음과 같습니다. (13,14,15)

  • 갑상선 -3% (50mg)
  • 지방 (700mg), 근육 (650mg) -70%
  • 피부 -20%
