The Times Of India _ Ishita Bhadra

Kajal Nair

Lack of iron can be related to iodine deficiency: Study

Ishita Bhadra | TNN | Mar 23, 2016, 08.38 AM IST

Vadodara: Iron deficiencies have been associated with only stunting growth and causing severe thinness, but iron deficiency is also found to be affecting general micro-nutrient levels among adolescents.

Researchers, following a recent study, pointed that iron deficiency can be a direct cause of iodine deficiency.

SSG Hospital's department of paediatrics studied 950 rural pre-adolescent students in the age group of 8-10 years, showed that while over 80%consume adequately iodized salt, over 30% suffers from moderate to severe iodine deficiency. Of these, 99% are anaemic.

"Iodine rich food supplements largely include vegetables organically grown in iodine rich soil. The absence of organic farming has left us with iodized salt as a major source of the nutrient. The other problem is the fact that the metabolism to absorb iodine into the body is correlated to iron levels in the blood," said researcher Dr Kajal Nair.

Experts claim that the dual deficiency during the pre-adolescent years affect the growth spurt resulting to stunting, severe thinness and reduced cognitive function.

"Iron deficiency, anaemia and iodine deficiency disorders are associated with impaired development of mental and physical co-ordination. And, once afflicted, these impairments cannot be eradicated even after anaemia has been treated. Thus, impairing school achievements as they grow older," added another researcher Dr Sunita Raol.
